Honfleur

This quaint fishing port with its cobbled streets and brightly coloured boats was the inspiration for many paintings by impressionists such as Cèzanne, Monet, Picasso and Renoir. Around the old port of Honfleur the buildings house numerous bars and restaurants and temporary art exhibitions can often be found in the 17th century salt warehouses behind - the Greniers à Sel - which used to supply the cod industry.
Other places to see at Honfleur include the Maritime Museum - housed in the Eglise St Etienne which dates back to the 14th Century - and the Ethnographical Museum - housed in the former Honfleur prison.
Honfleur's old town is also a must-see. This is centred around Place St Catherine, whose 15th Century church is made mostly of wood. There is a museum here celebrating the work of Erik Satie, the eccentric French composer.
